ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
English as a Second Language (ESL) at RGSS
Richmond Green Secondary School is home to a diverse student population. This diversity provides students with many opportunities for cultural enrichment and learning from one another. This diversity also means that many of our students are learning the language of instruction at the same time that they are learning the curriculum. The English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum is designed to ensure that each Multilingual Language Learner (MLL) has the maximum opportunity to become proficient in English and achieve high levels of literacy that are expected of all Ontario students. The curriculum is designed to provide MLLs with the knowledge and skills that are necessary for success in mainstream courses. The ESL curriculum is based on the belief that a broad proficiency in English is essential to students’ success in both their academic and social lives while at school and beyond.
ESL Courses
At RGSS there are five (5) Open level courses offered. These courses may be substituted for up to three (3) compulsory English credits. Additional ESL credits may be counted as optional credits for diploma requirements. MLLs may be entering from Grade 8, from another country, transferring from another board, or coming from out of province. Newcomers are assessed at the YRDSB Reception Centre while Grade 8 students select courses based on their Grade 8 teacher’s recommendation and/or an assessment administered by a secondary school ESL teacher.
Each ESL course is designed for MLLs who have had the opportunity to develop language and literacy skills in their first language. Each course focuses on enhancing the students’ listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Courses are tailored to our students’ personal and lived experiences. In our classes we provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where students participate in engaging activities that develop their language acquisition and literacy skills.
